For a product to be labeled certified organic it must have at least ninety five (95%) certified organic ingredients and to be labeled containing organic ingredients the percentage must be above seventy (70%) percent.  That is impossible with any shampoo or conditioner unless you count the percentage of water in the product.  Luckily for parents of babies there are responsible makers of almost organic baby shampoo which will still clean the baby’s hair while eliminating most of the chemicals that can cause problems with a baby’s delicate exterior.

California Baby makes a Tea Tree and Lavender Body Wash and Shampoo in an 8.5 ounce bottle for just under twelve ($12) dollars.  It works on dandruff, lice, cradle cap and dermatitis.  It is a no tears formula and has no SLS, DEA or numbing agents to cause issues with your baby.  The scent is a combination of lavender and tea tree.  The tea tree has anti bacterial properties and the lavender helps to calm stressed feelings and any irritated skin and scalp.

Another organic baby shampoo is offered by Angel Baby.  Their description touts its being made from a pure gentle castile soap with just enough lavender to calm the user.  It comes in a foaming soap dispenser so you can use it at the bathroom sink as well as the tub.  The product is also a combination body wash and shampoo and they make the point that they only use certified organic ingredients and the product is also certified “vegan”.  This product is in a 5.3 ounce foaming dispenser for $12.95.  Unless your child is hyper allergic to most of the baby shampoo products it is very expensive to use organic baby shampoo when Johnson’s sixteen ounce bottle of baby shampoo is less than $3.

Baby shampoo of the organic type are much healthier and more gently on your baby’s sensitive skin than any other types of chemical based shampoo. Whilst it is easy to ignore the organic and herbal brands in favor for the more heavily marketed, and often cheaper, well known brands you are advised to conduct research and discover exactly what is in the big-name baby shampoos. You might be surprised at just how many chemicals are contained in them (in fact they are virtually made of 100% chemicals) and how little regards those corporate giants truly do have for your child.

Organic baby shampoo should be marked with some, but preferably all, of the follow labels:

No sodium lauryl sulfate
No artificial parabens
No artificial fragrances
No Animal Testing
Toxin-free

If a baby shampoo is labelled organic but contains artificial fragrances, dyes or parabens (preservatives) or the commonly used (in regular shampoo) sodium lauryl sulfate then it is not truly organic. Organic means natural; that is a shampoo that contains wholly naturally derived ingredients.

What is wrong with big brand baby shampoo?
Big brand baby shampoos, with big advertising and marketing budgets, aim to maximize profits; after all that is the idea of a business. Therefore ingredients are sourced as cheaply as possible and often with little regard for the environment. although ingredients are tested (unfortunately often on animals) for their suitability on humans, there is no way to account for everybody’s individual sensitivities and because they are chemical based there is an increased chance of major skin reactions occurring, particularly in babies.

On the other hand, baby shampoo organic brands use natural ingredients that are must less likely to cause a skin reaction or allergy. It is easy to tell what you are getting with any baby shampoo – simply read the label. If you see a large list of ingredients with names longer than the alphabet, then it is chemical based. If on the other hand you see a list of familiar fruit and plant names then it is an organic baby shampoo. All organic shampoos are however labelled as such to make life easier and to attract wise buyers who are interested in preserving the environment and providing their baby with the safest shampoo option.

Organic shampoo is great for the environment as you aren’t washing chemicals down the drain. The process of making the shampoo also causes harm to waterways and land, not to mention air pollution. You will also notice no rashes or reactions on your baby when you use organic shampoo.

It is never too late to make the switch so if you are yet to try organic shampoo but have been considering it, give it a go and see what a difference it makes to your baby’s health.

Organic baby shampoo is becoming more and more main stream.  And think about it.  Babies are more sensitive to chemicals so they are the first who should use organic shampoo.    A child’s skin is extremely sensitive and has been shown to be able to absorb high concentrations of soaps and lotions.

I generally would recommend checking out all organic baby shampoo brands on a site like Amazon.  They have a much larger selection than Target or Walgreens.

You may think soap or shampoo can’t be harmful but you are wrong.  Pick up any of the major baby shampoo brands and read the ingredients.  It’s filled with dyes, preservatives, and other synthetic agents.  All of which can be quickly absorbed through your child’s skin and into their blood stream.

As a simple general rule, avoid products with an ingredient list full of chemicals and pickup brands that have edible ingredients.  Many organic baby shampoos contain soy protein, sugar beets, coconut oil, and green tea.
